After a day of devouring the sights, sounds and flavors of Portland, there’s no better reward than a comfortable pillow. As the city attracts increasing numbers of visitors from near and far, hotel developers are meeting the demand: Ten new properties are currently in the works in and around downtown.
An 1880s building in Old Town Chinatown is being transformed into a 36-room budget-conscious boutique hotel and hostel in the thick of the city’s vibrant nightclub scene; opening this summer, The Society Hotel will house a lobby, café and bunk room on the ground floor, rooms with shared and en suite baths above, and a rooftop terrace. In the Lloyd District, Hotel Eastlund is expected to open in May, featuring a street-level café and wine bar and a rooftop restaurant by renowned Portland restaurateur David Machado.
Two downtown properties are planning 2016 openings: The historic Cornelius and Woodlark buildings on S.W. Alder St. will retain their distinct external features as they transition into a 150-room hotel in a $30 million renovation by Provenance Hotels, and Hilton is building a luxury hotel at S.W. Jefferson St. and Second Ave. as part of its new boutique brand, Curio. Hilton is also breaking ground on a Canopy hotel in the Pearl District this fall. Meanwhile, the Oregon Pioneer Building is being converted into a boutique hotel — the building’s historic Huber’s Café will remain — and the Grove Hotel is proposed as a 52-room lifestyle hotel in a renovated building at N.W. Fourth Ave. and Burnside St.
