Once-In-A-Lifetime Firework Spectacular in Portland Tonight

Just a few weeks ago, over 40,000 residents and visitors crossed Portland’s newest bridge, the Tilikum Crossing.  While the bridge has yet to officially open, it is Portland’s newest bridge in 40 years and when it does open, it will be the first of its kind in the United States, a bridge designed especially for the use of public transportation.

[blockquote right=”pull-right”]For the first time in 40 years, a new bridge spans the Willamette River in Portland. At more than 1,700 feet in length, the Tilikum Crossing is the only bridge of its kind in the U.S., designed to carry light rail trains, buses, streetcars, bicyclists and pedestrians.[/blockquote]

Tonight, the celebration continues with a one-of-a-kind fireworks and Orange Picnic spectacular. This free event starts off at 5:00 p.m. when the public viewing and picnic area opens.  A variety of food carts such as Koko’s Grill and Voodoo Doughnuts will be on hand as well as a special edition ice cream from Salt & Straw, the Orange Olive Oil and Burnt Orange Marmalade. The evening will also feature a BridgePort beer garden, where you’ll find the exclusive Tilikum Crossing IPA.

Enjoy music from various groups and visit the Portland Picnic Society who will be sharing picnicking tips from their newest cooked, conveniently titled, “The Picnic.”  The highlight of the evening will be the Fireworks Spectacular starting at 9:00 p.m. from the bridge which is set to be one of the biggest and best the Portland region has ever seen.

A few things to know before you go:

  • The site, the Zidell Yards, is a gravel surface, so it’s BYOC (bring your own chair) or cushy blanket.  Picnic tables and benches will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • There is no special parking.  Consider taking the Portland Streetcar, Tri-Met’s Line 35 bus, walking or biking.  Bicycle parking is available on-site.
  • Bring an empty bottle to fill at the free water station.  No outside beverages will be allowed except for factory-sealed water bottles.
