Earlier today, San Jose, California city officials announced that Silicon Valley residents will soon have a direct flight to London’s Heathrow starting next year in May. The new daily service will be the first regularly scheduled commercial flight to London from San Jose. The new service will launch on May 4, 2016 and will feature one of British Airways newest aircraft, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
“London is the No. 1 requested international destination from Mineta San José International Airport, and we’re so pleased to share the news today that we have delivered this service to Silicon Valley businesses and residents,” SJC Director of Aviation Kim Becker adds. “We warmly welcome British Airways and the innovative Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner to San Jose.”.
During the press conference, city officials excitedly discussed the opportunities that this new service will bring to the region, even though similar service is available just miles north from San Francisco International Airport. One of the advantages that travelers will find using this new route is reduced weather-related delays that are extremely common for flights in and out of San Francisco.
Additionally, San Jose hasn’t seen direct service to Europe since American Airlines cancelled their flights to Paris in 2001. City officials said bringing British Airways to San Jose was not an overnight effort and it took nearly four years to secure the partnership. It’s the fourth new destination for the San Jose airport in 2015, following flights to Beijing, Dallas and Eugene.
Tickets for this new route go on sale tomorrow. Visit British Airways for details.
