  • DFW Airport and American Airlines Announce Plans for New $3 billion Terminal F

DFW Airport and American Airlines Announce Plans for New $3 billion Terminal F

If you’ve ever had a longer layover or perhaps transferred between terminals at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and used the Skylink, you’ve likely passed by an “empty” terminal space.

At some point, DFW knew the demand for flights would increase and so the land and Skylink route was set aside and built around for the future. Well, that future has arrived and may be in operation as early as 2025. Today, DFW and American Airlines announced the development of the sixth terminal at DFW, Terminal F.

The plans call for DFW to invest up to $3 to $3.5 billion in terminal improvements, including the construction of Terminal F and enhancements to Terminal C. The identified site south of Terminal D provides significant flexibility for phasing in the number of gates for Terminal F, with a long-term projection of up to 24 gates, as demand for additional facilities is warranted.

“Today’s announcement sets the stage for DFW Airport’s next 50 years,” said Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW Airport. “The new Terminal F and the expansion that could follow will provide the region with the growth it needs to compete with international business centers. The Airport is growing faster than ever, and it needs to keep pace with the Dallas-Fort Worth economy to provide jobs and connections for businesses and families.”

Design work for the new terminal will begin immediately. Together, DFW and American will explore several different options for the layout of the Terminal F site. DFW and American expect the details to be finalized as part of a new airlines lease agreement for DFW that is being negotiated. DFW and American anticipate the investment to be financed by bonds and repaid through airlines rates and charges over the life of the bonds.

DFW Airport welcomed a record 69 million customers in 2018, and the Airport anticipates more passengers and air service to be added in the next two years than in the past two decades.

Over the past several years, American has expanded with additional DFW service, and by June 2019, the airline will operate more than 900 daily flights from the Airport. In total, passengers have access to more than 230 nonstop destinations on American from DFW.

  • American Airlines Launches New Nonstop Service to San Luis Obispo from Dallas/Ft. Worth

American Airlines Launches New Nonstop Service to San Luis Obispo from Dallas/Ft. Worth

San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) welcomed its first nonstop flight from Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW). American Airlines will now provide daily service between SBP and DFW.

“We look forward to beginning this new route from San Luis Obispo to our largest hub in Dallas/Fort Worth,” said Kyle Mabry, Vice President, Western Division Sales. “This new service will provide customers access to the more than 900 peak daily departures at DFW, including new seasonal service to Dublin and Munich beginning in June.”

The route will provide several benefits to the San Luis Obispo community. It will link the region directly into American Airlines’ hub airport, and offer one-stop access to an additional 89 destinations, both domestic and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The flight will also provide increased access to San Luis Obispo County’s businesses, higher learning institutions, and popular wine region.

Direct service to Dallas/Ft. Worth has long been sought after in San Luis Obispo, and comes after years of work on behalf of the airport, Visit SLO CAL, San Luis Obispo County, and several regional partners.

“This Dallas flight is an important part of our strategy to establish SLO CAL as a leading destination,” shared Chuck Davison, President, and CEO of Visit SLO CAL. “Increasing air service into SLO CAL is not only vital to the strength of our tourism industry, but it is also essential to the sustainability of our economy and overall quality of life. These new flights don’t just connect people, they connect economies, and each time we do that we make this an even better place to live, work and visit.”

The route will help extend SBP’s impressive growth streak. San Luis Obispo now has service to six major cities with a total of 16 flights each day and has virtually doubled its passenger traffic over the last five years.

Debbie Arnold, Chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors, said, “I am so happy to see that the commitment to tourism and our local economy has resulted in improving our regional airport and attracting new services to more destinations.”

“Keep in mind that with this flight, we’re not just getting connections to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex—although that in itself is huge,” added Kevin Bumen, Director of Airports. “We’re also getting dozens of additional connections through one of the busiest airports in the country, and on the world’s largest airline. The airport and its partners work nonstop to provide the community new connectivity through powerful airline networks, and our efforts are really beginning to pay off.”

The route is flown on an Embraer 175 jet, equipped with 12 First Class seats, 20 Main Cabin Extra seats offering additional legroom and 44 seats in the Main Cabin. Visit aa.com for complete details.

  • American Airlines Introduces 18 New Routes and Adds Seats to Paris and Madrid

American Airlines Introduces 18 New Routes and Adds Seats to Paris and Madrid

American Airlines is opening up new options for summer travel with additional flights to more cities across the U.S. as well as two new flights to Europe. The 18 new routes start this summer and include a new destination: Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell, Montana (FCA), with service from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The airline is also returning to Canada’s Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia (YHZ), with service from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and LaGuardia Airport in New York (LGA).

The world’s largest airline is also increasing summer service from DFW to two popular European cities next summer: Paris and Madrid.

    More domestic flights from hubs

“With 18 new routes, we are committed to providing the most choices for our customers across the U.S. and a chance to see the world,” said Vasu Raja, Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning for American. “Service to Kalispell, for example, offers an exciting destination for our customers to experience. It also introduces new opportunities for local Kalispell customers to connect across American’s vast network through LAX, ORD and DFW.”

At the same time, the company is investing to provide a more consistent experience across regional and mainline fleets. American’s dual-class regional aircraft are equipped with first class seats, Wi-Fi and free wireless entertainment, and work has already begun to provide access to power at every seat.

    More service from DFW

American continues to grow its largest hub as it increases to 900 flights per day in the summer of 2019 by opening 15 new gates at the Terminal E satellite. American will add five new routes from DFW beginning in April with service to San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) in California. In May, the airline will launch new daily service to Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR) in South Carolina. Then, in June, in addition to Kalispell, American begins year-round service to Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) in Pennsylvania and daily seasonal service to California’s Wine Country via Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa.

The airline will also add a second daily flight to Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in Paris and Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) starting June 6, providing more choices and connectivity for its customers and cargo, improving what is already the most robust service to those destinations from DFW. Both the Madrid and Paris flights will be on board American’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

“The additional flights are scheduled to provide more flexibility in a traveler’s day with a later departure from DFW and from CDG, and, in the case of MAD, enable optimal connectivity to Iberia’s network from larger markets such as Sacramento, California (SMF); Reno, Nevada (RNO); and Guadalajara, Mexico (GDL),” said Raja.

Customers flying to CDG and MAD from DFW can choose fully lie-flat business class seats featuring access to the Flagship Lounge and chef-designed meals, as well as a lumbar support pillow and duvet from sleep experts Casper. Or, they can opt for one of more than 20 Premium Economy seats featuring more width, legroom and adjustability; extendable foot and head rests; a chef-inspired meal; complimentary amenity kits and a Casper pillow and blanket.

The additional CDG and MAD flights will be operated as part of the Atlantic Joint Business (AJB) among American, British Airways, Iberia and Finnair. Through the AJB, customers can seamlessly book and fly on nearly 150 trans-Atlantic flights to hundreds of destinations in North America, Europe and the Caribbean.

    Domestic Additions

American also plans to increase service from its largest hub at DFW. As announced in March, the airline reached a lease agreement with the airport resulting in 15 new regional gates after renovating the Terminal E satellite, which is scheduled for completion during the summer of 2019. As part of the expansion, American will add new service to Valley International Airport (HRL) in Harlingen, Texas, beginning March 3, and launch seven additional domestic routes from DFW:

    • Beginning March 3, new daily, year-round service:
      • DFW–Augusta Regional Airport (AGS) in Georgia
      • DFW–Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV) in Florida
      • DFW–Yuma International Airport (YUM) in Arizona
      • DFW–Meadows Field Airport (BFL) in Bakersfield, California
    • Beginning April 2, new daily service:

      • DFW–Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) in Arizona (year-round)

These new routes are part of American’s plan to grow its DFW operations from approximately 800 peak daily departures today to close to 900 peak daily departures next summer.

“We want the best for customers and that means having an expansive network out of DFW,” said Cedric Rockamore, Vice President of DFW Hub Operations for American. “These new routes are going to provide so many more unique travel opportunities, domestically and internationally, connecting customers from all over the world.”

American will also operate the following new routes next year:

  • American Airlines Expands European Footprint and Modifies Asia Service

American Airlines Expands European Footprint and Modifies Asia Service

American Airlines is expanding its European network next summer with nine new routes designed to meet customer demand:

    • CLT: Daily year-round service to Munich Airport (MUC)
    • DFW: Daily summer seasonal service to Dublin Airport (DUB) and to MUC
    • ORD: Daily summer seasonal service to Athens International Airport (ATH) in Greece
    • PHL: Daily summer seasonal service to Edinburgh Airport (EDI) in Scotland; new summer seasonal service to Berlin-Tegel Airport (TXL), Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) in Italy and Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) in Croatia
    • PHX: Daily seasonal service to London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

Additionally, given the current fuel and competitive environment, American will suspend service between O’Hare International Airport (ORD) in Chicago and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) in October and seek a dormancy waiver from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the route authority. American will also reduce service between ORD and Narita International Airport (NRT) in Japan from daily to three days per week, effective in December.

    EUROPE

American will add three new destinations to its network with the introduction of service between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and TXL, BLQ and DBV next summer. These seasonal flights will be operated June through September on Boeing 767 aircraft, featuring lie-flat business class seats, Cole Haan amenity kits and chef-designed meals with award-winning wines.

“By providing the only nonstop service from North America to Bologna and Dubrovnik and adding Berlin to our international footprint, American is making it easier to see the world,” said Vasu Raja, Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning. “Through our Atlantic Joint Business, we have seen increased interest to these markets from the U.S., and adjusting our network to introduce these destinations will provide more choices for customers on both sides of the Atlantic.”

This summer, American launched seasonal service from PHL to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) in Hungary and Vaclav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) in the Czech Republic, as well as from ORD to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) in Italy and from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in Iceland, all of which will operate through the end of October and return in 2019.

American will also add a new nonstop flight from Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) in Phoenix to LHR, complementing existing service from PHX provided by Atlantic Joint Business partner British Airways. With the addition of American’s PHX–LHR service, American and British Airways together will operate more than 70 flights per day to London from North America.

“We are in the business of making the world more accessible, and with the success of Budapest and Prague, as well as the new flights we’re announcing today, we continue to make the world a little bit smaller for our customers,” said Raja. “We are pleased to work with our partners at British Airways to design a schedule that complements the full joint business.”

Atlantic Joint Business partner Finnair has also announced new service between Helsinki Airport (HEL) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which will begin March 31, 2019.

    ASIA

American will remove nonstop ORD–PVG service from its schedule in October and seek a dormancy waiver from the DOT to permit a return to the market once conditions improve. The last westbound flight will be October 26 and the last eastbound flight will be October 27. Customers holding reservations after these dates will be re-accommodated on other flights and can continue to reach PVG directly through American’s hubs at DFW and LAX and from ORD via NRT in conjunction with Pacific Joint Business partner Japan Airlines (JAL).

“We remain strongly committed to Asia and will continue to serve the region through our hubs in Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles,” added Raja. “Our Chicago–Shanghai service is unprofitable and simply not sustainable in this high fuel cost environment and when we have opportunities to be successful in other markets.”

American will also reduce its ORD–NRT service from daily to three days per week starting December 18. Together, American and JAL will continue to provide nonstop service from ORD to NRT 10 times per week. During the peak summer season between June and August, JAL will increase its service on the route so that combined, the carriers offer twice-daily service that captures peak demand out of Tokyo.

“These adjustments to our Asia service are necessary in this high fuel cost environment, but we remain committed to the network we’ve worked hard to build,” added Raja. “As with Shanghai, American will continue to serve Tokyo through our hubs in Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles.”

American and joint business partner British Airways together will provide more capacity to their LHR hub from American’s hubs at DFW and MIA. Beginning Oct. 28, American will move one of its two MIA–LHR flights to DFW–LHR using a Boeing 777-300ER, and British Airways will add its third MIA–LHR frequency using a Boeing 747-400.

“Customers across Europe will benefit from larger-capacity aircraft between LHR and MIA, and the DFW–LHR frequency will continue to provide great connecting opportunities through American’s centrally located hub,” said Vasu Raja, Vice President of Network & Schedule Planning. “By better leveraging the networks of our joint business partners we are laying the foundation for American to grow its long-haul international network more profitably in the years ahead.”

Simon Brooks, British Airways’ Senior Vice President of Sales for North America, said, “We are thrilled to have this partnership with American Airlines for over seven years now. We continually work with our joint business partners to ensure customers have the best travel experience, and this schedule change delivers on our promise to provide more options.”

Customers will continue to choose to fly on either American or British Airways through codeshare on all DFW–LHR and MIA–LHR flights as part of the joint business.

American will seek a dormancy waiver from the U.S. Department of Transportation for its service between ORD and PEK, and plans to remove the nonstop ORD–PEK service from its schedule in October. The last westbound flight will be Oct. 20 and the last eastbound flight will be Oct. 22. Customers already holding reservations after these dates will be reaccommodated on other flights, and can continue to reach PEK through American’s hubs at DFW and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). American intends to seek access to operate services at Beijing’s new international airport when it opens next year.

“American is operating more seats from Chicago this summer than in the past 10 years, and we are excited to continue to grow in this important hub,” said Raja. “However the current fare environment severely limits our ability to successfully compete between Chicago and Beijing. We remain committed to China and anticipate that moving to the new Beijing airport in the future will improve the viability of the route through the additional connectivity in conjunction with our codeshare relationship with China Southern in the long run.”

  • Southwest Announces New Nonstop Routes from Dallas’ Love Field

Southwest Announces New Nonstop Routes from Dallas’ Love Field

Southwest Airlines began in 1971 and as the airline grew, so did it’s challenges, but not like the one that started in 1979 with the Wright Amendment. The Wright Amendment was enacted in 1979 to limit air service out of Dallas’ Love Field to only Texas and four neighboring states.  Revisions to the amendment added a few more states in the late 90s, but starting in October 2o14, airlines will be able to add nonstop service to all domestic cities.  While this doesn’t directly benefit most airlines, it will highly benefit Southwest Airlines who is adding 15 nonstop routes from Love Field.

Southwest will begin serving five new nonstop destinations on October 13, followed by ten additional new nonstop destinations on November 2. The addition of these 15 new nonstop destinations will bring Southwest to a total of 31 nonstop destinations from Love Field.

“The official repeal of Wright Amendment federal flight restrictions signifies a turning point for the Southwest brand not just in Dallas, but from coast-to-coast,” said Gary Kelly, Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and CEO. “We are pleased to offer this new service to the Customers of our home airport, who have waited 34 long years, and we thank the many, many folks who made this opportunity a reality.  Goodbye, Wright Amendment. Hello, America!”

Beginning Oct. 13, 2014, Southwest Airlines will launch nonstop service from Dallas Love Field to:

    • Baltimore/Washington (BWI)
    • Denver
    • Las Vegas
    • Orlando
    • Chicago Midway

Beginning Nov. 2, 2014, Southwest Airlines will launch nonstop service from Dallas Love Field to:

    • Atlanta
    • Nashville
    • Washington, D.C. (Reagan National)
    • Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood
    • Los Angeles (LAX)
    • New York (LaGuardia)
    • Phoenix
    • San Diego
    • Orange County/Santa Ana
    • Tampa

In May, Southwest will announce the specific flight schedules and fares for the sale of the new service.
