Cotton candy, handmade quilts, cows, horses, baby animals and a giant Ferris wheel. You’ll find all that and more at the Great New York State Fair starting August 27 and running through September 7. Held in Syracuse every year since 1841, the NY State Fair has blossomed into a giant 12-day showcase of what’s best in the state. Hundreds of exhibits and competitions highlight New York State’s art and crafts, cooking, world-class wineries, breweries, technology, science and animals. Sample Taste of New York products – items grown and made within our state – from maple sugar to jams, and brews to wines. From deep fried pickles and cookies, to barbecue and candy apples, tastes at the fair are memorable.
Hit the mid-way for some high-flying, screaming and squealing fun. Watch the international horse show and then root for your favorite dog in the agility contest. See how flax turns into linen at the agricultural museum. Ride a camel at the petting zoo and listen to country music at the Barn Jamboree. Stop by the Dairy Building to sample super-fresh milk and prize-winning cheeses. Time it right, and you’ll meet the Dairy Princess, the winner of the annual state pageant. Check out the beautiful scenes and images carved in butter, and don’t forget to grab a fresh ear of corn or baked potato -topped with butter! And there is always the sand sculpture – what will they create this year?
In the Center of Progress building you can shop for products you may never have known about and get great prices, along with items you may have only heard about – from ever-sharp knives to food slicers and dicers. For a sweet tooth, satisfy it at one of the fudge shops where it’s made on site. The New York Fair has it all! Try games of chance where there’s a “winner, winner, winner” every time. Family entertainment includes a daily parade, wandering street performers, spectacular fireworks, and nightly shows with top stars on two stages. The State Championship Demolition Derby, on the last night, ends the fair with a bang!
One last thing, getting to the fair is easy as pie by taking the train. Amtrak will once again provide this summer service directly to the New York State Fair, offering families a convenient and affordable way to travel to the state’s largest annual event this summer. The train stops at Gate 11, a special platform that operates only during the 12 days of the Fair each year.
