This week, both Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines announced new routes and additional service from Seattle. Both airlines have announced new routes and additional service in the recent months and this week’s announcement adds to the already growing list.
Some individuals are worried that Delta’s new increased presence in Seattle is in direct competition with Alaska as some of Delta’s new routes are those that Alaska already serves. However, Delta has stated that they are adding these new routes out of Seattle to accompany their newly added international routes out of Seattle to Asia and Europe. Alaska continues to be a partner with Delta on many of each other’s flights in and out of Seattle.
Delta announced new service out of Seattle to Jackson Hole, WY; Phoenix, Tuscon and Palm Springs as well as an additional flight to Honolulu during the winter season. Both Jackson Hole and Tuscon will see service once-a-week on Saturdays, whereas Palm Springs will see one daily flight and Phoenix will see 5 daily flights. These routes, excluding Honolulu, will be flown by Skywest Airlines, a regional carrier for Delta Air Lines.
Alaska’s announcement will take Alaska to three new destinations that are currently not served by Alaska. Starting in June, Alaska will begin once-daily service out of Seattle to New Orleans and Tampa, FL. Then in September, Alaska will also add once-daily service out of Seattle to Detroit. These new routes will feature Alaska’s Boeing 737-800 and 737-900 aircraft.
